3 Ways for Your Budding Genius to Find an Online Mentor
You know what it’s like to venture into unknown land. You’ve been given directions, you did your research on where you’re headed but still, it sure would be nice to have a passenger along for the ride who has taken the trip before. I have felt this way, many a time. Like the time I went to college. At first, when I finally figured out what I wanted to do with my life I wasn’t fortunate to know someone who had gone down the same path I was looking to take. Until that is I switched my major. It was then I was given not only a new advisor but I was fortunate enough to stumble upon a mentor. My advisor not only helped me with what classes to take but from time to time he would also share his stories of challenges. This made me think twice about knocking on his door to whine or talk about quitting knowing he had history with the likes of Stokely Carmichael. He laid out possible tracks for me after graduation that were completely different than what kinds of career tracks I knew about growing up. And most importantly when I went to his office one day to tell him ‘they’ say I can’t do ‘it’ he sat me down and told me yes you can. I hope and pray my own three run into a mentor like this, several of them in fact over their lifetime. Someone who has the time and is somehow moved to give them the information that no one else seems willing to share but everyone else going where they’re headed already knows. Someone who sees something in them and is willing to invest their time and wisdom – just because. Someone, other than myself who is ultimately willing to help my child. Until the time comes that the kiddos stumble into such a kind and wonderful person I am starting with online mentor programs. I can monitor the mentor relationship online, it gives them practice and insight into what a mentor is and fingers and toes crossed who knows where such a relationship can lead to one day.
