IS YOUR CHILD ON THE HIGH OR LOW END OF THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP?
Despite the fact that children of all races and ethnicities attend school together there are still vast inequities. Many parents may not think that inequities in test scores are prevalent. But indeed they are. It is important for all parents to understand that inequities are not just about dilapidated buildings or a shortage of a highly qualified teachers. Even in middle class schools and neighborhoods there are inequities in test scores, also known as the academic achievement gap.
The Academic Achievement Gap can be defined as:
- When one group of students outperforms another group and the difference in average scores for the two groups is statistically significant (that is, larger than the margin of error)” (NAEP)
- Extending to disparities in high school and college graduation rates, access to gifted and talented classes/advanced placement classes and income earnings as an adult.
It is our mission to bridge the gap between parents and schools!
