Crispy Baked Drumsticks (Aroma as My Marketing Gimmick)

I grew up on home cooked meals. But as a kid I lived for the taste of fast food on the weekend. Greasy, crispy fries and the smell of equally greasy grilled burgers were a welcomed treat. Now with a family of my own I still like to save our out-to-eat days for the weekends.
The kiddos love to eat out. They like my cooking.  But, a nice change on what's on the menu is much appreciated, not only by the eaters but also by the cook (meaning me).  When I feel like I'm up for letting the kiddos make food choices, which isn't often, I yell to the backseat on the ride home “what do y'all want for dinner?!"
( says the teen with expensive taste buds as taking out a family of five to any restaurant that has the word ‘entree’ on the menu can put a slight dent in the grocery budget – if you know what I mean)
I used to think that the kiddos taste buds and hungry stomachs drove their food choice decisions.  But according to a new study I'm beginning to think, maybe not.  A recent study looked at marketing directed at children on the inside and outside of fast food restaurants. Every day, almost a third of children aged 2 to 11 years and more than 40 percent of 12- to 19-year-olds consume food and drinks from fast food restaurants. Remarkably the study found that the majority of black, middle-income and rural communities are disproportionately exposed to marketing tactics directed at children.
  • Marketing tactics on the inside included indoor play area and display of kids’ meal toys.
  • Marketing tactics on the outside included advertisements with cartoon characters; advertisements with movie, TV or sports figures; and advertisements for kids’ meal toys.
Until the kiddos can make great food choice decisions on their own I will definitely have to choose for them.  I may even start to guide their weekend food choices.  In the meantime this means that weekday home cooked meals are even more important.  This week? Crispy drum sticks – one of the tastiest, easiest and fastest meats to cook - ever!!   And no marketing gimmicks from my kitchen to get them to the table either.
