Take-Out Meals At Home: Deep Dish Turkey Supreme Pizza
What kind of pizza do you enjoy? When I was twenty two I gave up pork and beef. At one point in time I even tip toed into the vegan land – but not for long, I missed cheese too bad. I tried vegan cheese and it’s got nothing on the real thing if you ask me. Plus giving up cheese meant that I would have to give up pizza or at least agree to eat it with only sauce, and bread – and according to my taste buds, that just going too far. The kids and I have tried various versions of cheese and veggie pizza at just about every pizza joint around town. Some days I am over it and I want a meat filled pizza. My solution? My version of a turkey filled deep dish pizza. It may take a second to put together – but it is oh so worth it. Plus you can get the kiddos involved and have them put on the toppings!
[Important note: I bought two bags of pizza dough from our local grocery store.]
Ingredients Pizza Sauce:
Directions Pizza Sauce (for 2 pizzas):Melt butter in medium sauce pan on medium heat. Add onion, salt, black pepper until onions are translucent. Add garlic and cook about one minute longer. Add tomato sauce and sugar. Simmer for thirty minutes. Add oregano, take off stove.
Deep Dish Pizza Toppings:
Directions Deep Dish Pizza:
Layer bottom of pizza dough with mozzarella cheese. Add a layer of pizza sauce – as much as you’d like. Add ground Italian turkey sausage, bell peppers and mushrooms. Add a final layer of mozzarella cheese and turkey pepperoni. Bake in oven at 425 degrees on lowest rack for 20-25 minutes. I used the other pizza dough and remaining pizza sauce to let the kiddos make their own pizza!
Happy Weekend and Enjoy!
