Promote Reading for Little and Big Kids! ~ What are DRA and Lexile Levels and Why Should I Care?

 
Are you choosing books that are on your budding scholar’s grade level? Are they?  While it is most definitely great for your kiddo to read, it is even better to make sure they are reading books that are not too easy for them.  Easy reads can be fun, but you want your kiddo to be a reading comprehension champion so that they will become an educational contender!  Therefore, balance reading time with the books they like, even if they are too easy, with the ones you like – the ones that get them thinking and asking questions.

 

 

How can you do this? By checking out books DRA or Lexile level!

 

 

 

What’s a DRA level?

DRA level refers to a reading level based on a DRA test.  Your child’s teacher scores them on reading accuracy, comprehension, and fluency. The easiest books have letters (DRA Level A, B, C, etc.) then change to numbering (DRA Level 1 to 80). See DRA reference chart below.

How can you find your child’s DRA and/or Lexile level?  Ask their teacher – she/he knows.  After you find out then look for books on that level and challenge every now and again with books above their level.
