Summer Learning: Reading Comprehension Activities for Teens, Tweens and Kids
What kind of old wives tales did you hear growing up? My grandma was famous for making us cut off her window unit, opening up the door and sitting quiet while God did his work aka while thundering and lightening were going on outside. Whenever I tried to ask for a sip of her coffee she would say no because coffee would make you black (besides the fact that I already was). Come to find out, none of these things are true. I used to believe that the summer learning loss was a myth too, or at least a bit of an over exaggeration. But, it’s not. You better believe that the summer learning loss is a real as high cholesterol. So while homework will end when school does we will keep on working this summer. Not like homeschool working. But like every week they are not at a camp, at grandmas and granddad’s they will be putting some kind of learning in their heads. And that’s the truth!
Here’s to Closing the Achievement Gap (over the summer)!
First up are these websites that are awesome for practicing reading comprehension. These are good to leave for practice while you are at work and the kiddos are at home or at summer camp. They can go to these sites, complete the reading passages, answer the questions and then either screenshot or print out their results for you to see later.
High and Middle School
For your middle and high schooler have them visit Readtheory. Sign up as a student.
Choose level (If your tween or teen does perfectly fine on a quiz then their level goes up, same for if they don’t do so well. So for instance if they/you choose level 9 and they score below 70% on a quiz then the ReadTheory system will automatically change their level – Perfect!!)
Select reading passages.
Then answer questions...and get smarter!
Parents the best part? You can receive an analysis of results. Sweet!!
