9 Breakfast Ideas for Kids, Tweens & Teens

My lunch drama is now compounded by weekday breakfast standoffs.  I was brought up old school.  My mama (and her mama) believed wholeheartedly in giving kids a warm breakfast before they went to school.  Continuing faithfully in tradition, this means Pop Tarts just won’t do.  Normally we shoot for grits and turkey bacon.  But just like my turkey sandwiches for lunch, the kiddos are over it.  I try to act as if I do not care when the little ingrates come downstairs, take one look at their plates and say “I’m not hungry.’
‘Seriously!?’ I always respond. Right after I remind them, ‘I could have slept a whole 10-15 more minutes.’
This scene played out last week.  My usual response didn’t make the ungrateful one turn around and gobble up the breakfast before them.  I was then torn: should I bend to cold cereal and waste food?  (Another faithful tradition followed – waste not, want not). Last week, I refused to bend.  Reminded them as they went upstairs to brush their teeth how long it would be before they had lunch.  And still they walked on.  I wondered around 10:30 if they were hungry.  Looked at my phone at 12:00 to make sure I hadn't missed a call about the ungrateful one passing out.  No call. They survived.  Still, I am trying to avoid carrying around a half a day’s worth of ‘is my child hungry guilt?’ I am on the lookout for alternative breakfast – fulfilling but still healthy.  We intend to give these a try. What do you think?

There are arguments for and against turkey bacon and regular bacon organic vs. non-organic.  The choice is yours.  If you’re interested in other alternatives, then Organic Prairie and Applegate offer great alternatives.
